Collision detection and handling: ODE can do this. Not only using primitive, you can supply ODE with meshes too.
Of course, the more complicated the mesh, the slower the ODE calculation. Another good reason to work with SubD: ODE is certainly capable of doing quick collision detection using 3K or 4 K poly meshes, but any speed will be lost with 60 K poly meshes - just like Poser's collision detection, which I never uses since it is far too slow.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
