Ockham (and everyone else): go check out all the applications available for Firefox [here](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/). On the left, click Privacy & Security. On the bottom right, under "See All Privacy & Security", click on Most Popular First.

My three favorite add-ons are on the top:
Adblock Plus: blocks banner ads and other images.
NoScript: blocks Javascript, which comes in very handy.
FlashBlock: blocks annoying Flash ads, like the ones seen all over Yahoo.
