It looks to me like Poser is rendering the shadow of each individual hair in the group, but in areas where there are no hairs, it's letting light through.

Whatever it is, it's definitely caused by the hair group.  I took nyguy's advice and rendered the scene w/o the figure.  The "effect" disappeared.  Likewise, when I rendered with the figure and set the hair group to invisible, the effect disappeared.

Even stranger, notice in the attached that the same effect seems to occur from the cigarette in the figures mouth. 

I guess I could fix this up in post work, but would sure like to know what the ##@! is going on.
