hey, any time you can get an advance on sin, it's a good day...;)
Usually the end product is a jpg or png file. If you open one (say a freebie hair texutre) you'll see several parts 'painted' on, usually in a series of strips. This is done (ordinarily) with UVMapping, which is a whole 'nother ball of wax...;) But I think they create layers in Photoshop (or Gimp, if you want a free equivalent).
