Actually, to be pedantic (which I am), TLA is really 'Three Letter Abbreviation'. It's only an acronym if it makes a word that's readily pronounceable. Since everybody says it as Tee - Ell - Ay, rather than Tla, it's just an abbreviation. Examples of acronyms are RADAR, LASER, SONAR, PIN. Incidentally, the UK magazine New Scientist has been running an occasional series on (if my memory serves me correctly) RAS or redundant abbreviation syndrome. Examples are PIN Number (the N in PIN stands for Number) and of course RAS Syndrome. Maybe we could have WIP Progress too. Actually, I'm pretty sure there is a list of all the web abbreviations somewhere on the WWW Web.
