Yeah its very handy, but item must be on transparent layer of course otherwise it will select whole layer :)

You can add to selection with CTRL+SHIFT+Click on another layer.

Or substract with CTRL+ALT+ Click on another layer.

There is tons of other shortcuts for layers, so I`ll stop here lol. :)
