Good question ...
Answer: When one starts "building" props (like houses, bridges, etc. then the number of polygons can add up real fast ...** (Please see image above excerpt from the "Magic Box" tutorial) **... and create an unnecessary burden on resources, i.e., RAM.
@ Miss Nancy ... You are absolutely right ... if one is using the "Magic Box" prop which only has 6 polygons and can not be deformed (very much) with a magnet or a wave. Please see, also, my reply to bagginsbill above.
