A nice opportunity to hi-jack another thread to ask a further question... :-) rcook, there is something I wonder for quite some time, and I need someone with server experience to answer it. Every board seems to be upset about Gozilla (or similar) and starts to take action in defence - and I don't really know why... I don't know this tool, but I think it is simply a utility that downloads multiple files at once (just like my browsers, iCab or IE). Well,... everyone will have a maximum speed - I'm ADSL now for some months, and my technical limit is 96KB/s in theory, and some 88KB/s in reality. 1) Let's say a server is faster - then it doesn't matter. If I load multiple files, the individual download time gets longer, but the total download time stays the same. 2) Let's say a server is slower (because it can't cope) - then it's just the same, only longer. 3) Let's say a server is intentionally slower, like limiting the speed to some 9KB/s. Then, and only then multiple downloads will be faster for me. However - in none of these cases will it create more traffic to the server, and if someone gets punished then it is only other users and only in case 3. So why are the server people so much afraid? Do you have to pay for a specific traffic within a given (short) time frame? All ISPs (that I know of here) charge for the total filesizes. I might be on a wrong trail (that's why I ask), but I think this is a typical example of "complaining for the wrong reasons". What actually will cause damage is all sort of "automatic downloading" which randomly grabs gigs of binary files, no matter if they are useful at all - but this has nothing to do with parallel downloads. Everyone with a flatrate can cause this damage, even if it happens one-by-one. I've seen boards already, who limit downloads to "one file at a time". This is very bad, because it is quite useful to let your browser handle at least some 2-3 files at a time. When one server gets stuck, you can use the online time for the other 1-2 to run - but you already risk getting banned... :-( I'll suggest a new option to the iCab people to restrict multiple downloads from the same server - that might fix it without changing the prefs every few minutes.
