"If you've no light, you've no render"

Ummm. Bzzzzt. Wrong.

Here is a render. There are NO LIGHTS in my scene. The render is not black. In fact it is "lit" rather nicely, with shadows and specular highlights and everything you expect.

All done with shaders.
