Don't worry about asking questions, it's a good thing.
I'd just apply some mat poses and see what happens to James.
If a M3 texture looks wonky, then it's not compatible, so try a M2 one.
You could also look at the maps themselves and compare them to the James texture. They should look quite different if incompatible.
