Rowlando:

Use Render>Render Settings to get to the Render Dialog
Select the Preview Tab
Your choices for Display Engine are ScreeD (software only) or OpenGL

With OpenGL you can choose hardware acceleration if your card is up to it.

ScreeD is a software only solution, and painfully slow on most systems.  Unless you have a really old video card, or one with very little onboard memory, this is not a usable option.

I would try the options above (application control for OpenGL settings, clear cache before starting) rather than go to ScreeD.  Then again, maybe it will work acceptably for you.
