lol the installer is what daz uses to get them onto your pc it's like an .exe file or .sit file(mac) that places the templates on your comp
i actually started buy doing the same type of thing in an online chat client called IMVU (instant message virtual universe i think is the full name) and then i heard about daz and well bigger and better maps to play with so i decided to give it a shot and well i've been doing pretty good so far with the ones that i liked enough to put out as freebies
you may want to look through snowsultans freebies if you can't find the maps for the MFD he may have seam guides for it you can search him in search freebies or he may even still be in the top contributors listing
i use psp7 mostly for my texturing app but i've been using genetica studio3 and a couple other programs to creat more of my own textures not to mention there are many about the freebie community that are pretty wicked
