some programs, like Wings, Hexagon, and Blender, can both model and do UVMapping. I'm more familiar with the Wings version of UVMapping. Just think of it as a primer coat and masking tape, and your texture as the actual paint...;)

If you want to check out Wings 3d, there are some UVMapping tutorials (look for a barrell tut, which is how I got started), and just play around with it. it takes some time to get up and running on UVMapping (I still have a ways to go), but even then, you can UVMap to your heart's content.

Stop by the UVMappper forum, and pick up UVMapper Classic for free, if you don't feel like modeling...
