Step 1: Using a great little free fractal flame program called Apophysis I rendered a simple flame on a transparent background “png” file and imported it into Photoshop.

Step 2: Added a black background as a base.

Step 3: Added a layer above the flame object and changed its mode to “color dodge”. To this layer I applied a lens flare filter setting the lens type to 105mm Prime and the brightness to 135%.

Step 4: Selected the flame layer and added an outer glow FX using a light orange color and an elements size set to 128px leaving all else as is.

Step 5: Added a reflecting object between the background layer and the flame layer.

Flattened image.
