Some tips (not sure if it is usefull for you):

• If it has difference in materials you can collapse identical materials on import, then ungroup the object. after that you can select "material groups" in the material tab. Then switch to objects tab and regroup the same materials.

• If you haave a hard time seeing what each object is it is also handy sometimes to select: "render only selected objects" and with a fast preview render determine the object and rename/group them
