The "planes of foliage" are visible depending on the quality of the tree model itself, it has nothing to do with the Vue version. There are some really great tree models for Vue where the "planes" are almost not visible (although it's very difficult to be completely invisible due to the way how Vue structures plants). Take a look at some of my images to judge for yourself, like these ones. These "planes" are barely visible.

That's not entirely true. Again, it depends on the quality of the models, but also on the lighting quality and the render settings.
