If you don't do gamma correction, you will fail. This is one of those places where the difference between dark gray and light gray is crucial, as well as one of those places where a very large amount of variance occurs in a small area. We are keenly sensitive to anything wrong here in a render.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
