Subject: OT Vista and XP dual boot

Sure someone here has done this, can you put XP pro on a Vista machine and dual boot? Or do you have to start with an XP machine and add Vista?

Crap, followed the instructions but can't get to Vista now. You have to have a Vista disk and I don't have that, only have the restore disks for my laptop, not sure if they will work. I give up.

Hmmm maybe the files you need are on the restore discs?

They were and it worked, thanks for the link! I now have my Vista 64 and XP Pro 64 on the same system.

I dual boot XP pro (32-bit) and Vista (64-bit) on all my machines.
It's actually pretty easy to do, the only big thing to keep in mind is that when  installing Windows XP on top of an existing Vista install, it will screw up Vista's bootloader, preventing Vista from loading (it will just go straight to XP as XP's bootloader cannot see Vista).

There are a couple of free utilities that will restore Vista's bootloader (I use EasyBCD - just do a google search for it) and set up the dual boot options properly.

I'm thinking of getting either Vista 64 or XP Pro 64. If I may ask, which do you prefer for rendering or in general? Any problems with either so far?

I've done it. My favorite graphics apps just didn't run with it. I partitioned my hard drive, installed my copy of XP, and it's been smooth sailing ever since. I hate Vista.
