everything under xp runs a maximum of 2 gb user space and 2 gb system space in memory per task.  there is a /3 gb switch that allows an application designed for it to address 3 gb user space  memory.   Looking at page fault statistics for the virtual memory swap file can tell you if more real memory will give a significant improvment.
