If you are looking at modeling, I think wings3d is free so you don't have to rely on poser alone.  You can also add something like a phong or blinn node to the (alternate) specular highlights.

You can't paint on an image map directly in poser.  If you used another application to make one, you can add that map to the an object through the material.  You can also use the material room to fake it... but that'll take some time for you to learn.

And is this kind of what you are looking for?  I used a single white light and those material settings.
