THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Well, I did a tiny bit of Brycing around today. I was mostly interested in building the blades for a vent and then controlling them being open or closed via linking to a hidden primitive. It all worked well.

'Course, I then got way into building the frame. Its a Terrain painted in Photoshop.

Hope you all had a good weekend!

Yeah, I have a scene in mind, but who knows how long that will take. Maybe build one part each Sunday, 'til its all done, lol.

I had these images in my head back from when I was playing half-life 2, and would walk out of a small tunnel, into an open, exterior area. Lotsa pipes, vents, cables, etc. Something like that.

I love scenes like that, I've been working on one myself for... well ages.

I've got some hanging cables done now but those are on the laptop and I can't be bothered hoiking it out and plugging it in, I'd have to clear a space on the desk first....

But here are a few shots of previous incarnations:

Why is it that the things that make a scene most interesting - like hanging cables and tiny details, take the longest and can sometime be the most laborious to model?

NICE scenes ya got there Fran...;o)
Digging those doors.

Yeah, the details...the little things...thats what can truly help trick the viewers eye into seeing something as more realistic.

The spots of rust, the dirt in the cracks and crevices, fingerprints, and scratches. And, that's just talking about textures.

Of course, with any sci-fi scene is the pipes, cables, chains and wires, lol. I like to try and work as many different textures in there as possible, like trying to work wood and water into the scene just a little.

Of course.  ;o)

I'll get a link for it as it is a 16-bit tiff, and I can't attach it into the forum post.

There's a jpg preview, but you'll want to use the link to get the tif inside the zip file. [ http://www.kirkdunne.com/files/blind_cover_01.zip](http://www.kirkdunne.com/files/blind_cover_01.zip)

Inside the Terrain editor just use the "Picture" button to load the tif.
(be sure to increase the Terrain size to 1024 FIRST.)

I believe I reduced the thickness of the Terrain from the default 20.48 to 10.00 in that render above.

Enjoy!

Okay Quest, tutorial needed on how to create those (- especially the diagonals!)

Thanks AS, popped that texture into my Agent Smith folder...(har har har) (gloatingly)

On those doors, once I had the things UVMapped, I tested them in Poser (and cinema4d etc etc) and was quite surprised on just how good they looked - this is just a quickie, as I don't have the other version on this PC.

I suppose I really ought to connect up the Laptop... (sigh)

I've had an AS folder for... ooh years now.  I keep squirrelling Kirk's wonderful stuff away, even if I don't use it in a scene I've learnt such a lot from him - either from what he's actually said, or from taking apart his textures and materials.

Hey Rock on Kirk!

Yearse... and talking of textures, how did you do that texture AS?

Flood fill colour, add a little noise?  Or was there more to it than that?

It would suit the same sort of scene as those VR specs you made.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 04 February 2009 at 10:41 PM

and talking of textures, how did you do that texture AS?

Just a quickie image texture. I wrap them "world cubic" on Terrains such as this as the edges can show bad stretching of an image texture if used paramatrically. That's just the downside of using a terrain with beveled edges. ;o(

But, when I get a chance, I will re-make this Terrain at 2048x2048, and then export out the Terrain as an obj for much better uvmapping. I already tried it at this resolution of 1024x1024, and it actually looked decent as 250k poly obj, but the screw heads looked very bad, so I'll re-do it.

Pumeco...yeah those VR specs are still a favorite build of mine. Will use them one day fer sure, lol.

Don't worry if you're strapped for time, but if you did happen to have a little time available and could do a quick run through on how you made it.... I for one would be ever so grateful.

With apologies to AS…didn’t realize at the moment that we weren’t talking about the same thing and therefore misleading the thread. To those few interested in my techniques for developing sci-fi panels created using Photoshop…I’m in the process of creating a tutorial in that forum’s tutorial section. Mind you, those same textures can be turned into 3D heightmaps for Bryce with some manipulation. Particularly if you can convert them to 16 bit grayscale. Not all converters will satisfy the Bryce engine though. See Bikermouse or AgentSmith for 16 bit “tiff” procedures.

I've been trying to decide the best layout so that I can post it here in the tutorials section and also make an Adobe PDF file from it for email sharing. There are lots of variables involved since I would also like it to be available to Mac users as well but I don't know if PC and Mac can share PDF files created in Windows. Some feedback on this would be welcomed. I've also been busy creating my new avatar amoungst other things. LOL....Besides, aren't you running ragged yet with all your uni projects?

This is turning out to be a lengthier tutorial than expected; I hope it’s worth it. So far I have 22 PDF pages and counting. Pages being images with explanation. I’m guessing I can get two of them on one Renderosity tut page. I’m thinking I should be finished with it tonight or early tomorrow. Then it needs to be approved by Rendo before it’s posted.

Anyone know if PDF files created in Windows XP using Photoshop CS3 are readable in Mac? I think I’ll post this question in the Photoshop forum also.

If it’s not PC or Bryce to The Bryster it’s all heresy and out comes the comfy chair for the cardinal…LOL.

Yeah, I’m now thinking of revamping it to give a short version without all the detailing. Part of the problem is that it will be geared towards the beginner and intermediate levels. As such many of the procedures need to be explained as concisely as possible for those who are not as familiar with the program to follow along. Also, the subject matter lends itself to different aspects such as being able to create 3D cabling, 3D monitor screens, 3D lights and buttons of all types, lettering and decals, 3D grill vents, realistic texturing, grunge detailing and so forth that can be quite time consuming. So I will only be lightly touching on some of these aspects and perhaps do the others in future tutorials and then let the reader bring it all together in their work. Hello! Ang, have I lost you? LOL!

I need to ask, when something is tentatively offered, hoping that I can go back to my emails and find it again when things calm down - or I need a break.

Which is what I've done now - took a break I mean.

So is the tut ready then?  the big one with lots of info!

I like lots of info, and anyway, a) newbies can follow, and b) there may be a segment that I also need more info on, and until you look at a tut you never know what may turn out to be something you do understand and what may be something you don't...

Whatever it turns out to be I look forward to its arrival, with great anticipation and possibly bated breath.
