Apply the MATs and have a look at them in the Advanced Material Room.

You will see that the "no shader" MATs are basically Poser 4 compatible, good for quick preview renders or if you export your scenes to some other apps for rendering. I use them when I want to mess around with the material, it saves a bit of time deleting all the extra nodes. I also use them if a figure is in the background of a scene when details/effects are not so important.

On the other hand if you are doing a portrait or close up render then you will want to use the "shader" MAT.
