You can make models for Poser in any program that will export to obj. 3ds will also work, that will require some extra steps. If you want to try a bit of freeware that will output obj files, try the above link. Actually, over on the character creators forum, I'm trying to design some challenges that will be geared toward the beginner who wants to make props and characters for Poser.
