Subject: "Younger" facemorphs for M4

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Mon, 16 February 2009 at 6:31 PM · edited Mon, 24 February 2025 at 4:04 PM

Someone in the Poser forum was trying to make a teen M4. And since I love making morphs I thought that this would be a fun challenge.

So I ended up with a pack of 8 new morphs to make him look younger. The picture here shows all 8 loaded at full, but of course you can combine them as you see fit. I've also added a small smile here.

The morphs are: - SoftenFace

  • JawCornersIn
  • ChinCleftRemove
  • NoseYounger
  • ChinSmaller
  • CheeksSofter
  • MouthSofter
  • ChinHigher

They're absolutely free ^^ and available in Free Stuff now ^^

They do not require any other morph packs - it's all brand new morphs. PLEASE see the included ReadMe on how to best use them!

Have Fun!

Thanks!

BTW, I don't have M4.  But, because it's the same mesh as V4, these morphs will work in V4.  Of course, they're not all going to give good results.  But, they are "unique" and it's hard for some to get their faces to look "unique" even with 50,000 dialspins.  Having a few extra dials to spin increases the permutations of possibilities exponentially. :)

Oh cool! I didn't know M4 and V4 could share facemorphs! Now that opens a LOT of innnnteresting possibilities :woot:

Some of the ones you did work "OK."  The best one was the one that reduced the chin.  V4 doesn't have a morph like that and it's completely necessary if you're reverse aging her to a young/child character.  The jawline one was a bit out of whack at full strength.  The rest were decent if used at less than 1.  To really get it refined, it'd have to be done on her mesh so the verts would all be appropriate..

OR

You might be able to export M4's face and then import it as a morph target on V4.. then apply the morphs you made and.. uh.. then..maybe... nevermind.  You'd prob be better off redoing them for V4.  Otherwise, you might get this:

:)

(Although, I actually like Helen Thomas . spunky lady.. shame about the trainwreck though..)

Now, that's a morph I could really use! I can get non-supermodel faces for V4 by adding in a little of the male face presets, but she needs more age morphs to live a full life.

Oh yeah that's some face! Lots of character for sure!

I suppose I could do something like the same morphs for V4, they're not hard do do... And more morphs always increases the fun :)

I wonder if it would be possible to mnorph V4 into that lady though. Probably.. but.. why? ;)

Still.. it could be a fun challenge.

GAH! I need a vacation! Too may projects I want to do and too little time 😢

Any morphs you make would be most welcome! I just used your M4 younger morphs to animate a character going from youth to old man (rendering at the moment) meanwhile here's one of V4 I did a little while ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=har4KX2idrY

I'm working on a video which shows the characters at different stages of their life, so from the animation I will generate a series of morphs for each person, the story is set in the "real world" where not everyone looks like Ken & Barbie.
As to the face above, why want a morph like that? Wouldn't you listen if she sat down to tell you a story? :)

I agree.

The problem with V4's face and every other Poser figure's face is that there is no asymmetry.  But, that's really to be expected.  They are "base" figures from which someone could sculpt their own morphs/figures from.  So, they NEED to be symmetrical.  Otherwise, they'd be unusable for that purpose- You'd spend more time "correcting" the base mesh than you would adding your adjustments.

Another problem is the mesh itself.  If you look at the mesh for V4's face, you'll see concentration of mesh where movement is needed and where fine facial features are present.  That's normal.  You need higher concentrations of mesh where movement is desired (expressions) to get good, smooth surfaces and fine details.

But, in older faces, there are fine details everywhere.  I poked some fun at Helen Thomas but, I do really like her.  She's got style and a healthy bit of respect from Presidents and the Press Corps.  In regards to a face morph of an older person, what does her face tell you that contrasts with V4's face?  Simple - There's LOTS of detail everywhere.  When she smiles, subtle changes occur all over her face.  In younger, "tighter" faces, the changes could be handled with small movements of larger faces in the mesh.  However, in an older looking face, you have wrinkles all over and the geometry needs to be much denser to handle that.

One way to get around this in Poser is to use "tricks" like bump/displacement mapping to give the appearance of fine facial details.  With V4, I think any "older" morph will necessarily require good bump/displacement mapping in order to make up for the lack of physical mesh to work with.

Zbrush and XNormal are your friends when generating detail maps.

Xnormal is free and has always given me good results.

Crazybump is good for mapping also but has developed a healthy price tag since advancing beyond beta stage.

Blender can handle sculpting and mapping but many people find it difficult to use.

Sweet!  Xnormal is in my download que.  Just grabbed the first tutorial.  Thanks!

A displacement map would be a good idea to enhance wrinkles. I used that on my Geezer product.

You can easily make unsymmetric faces in Poser, it's a most overlooked feature: Every morph can be split into a left and right part. And then you can simply dial one side a little different from the other.

This is an example of a few monutes worth of dial spin with a few key morphs (Old and a few of the character morphs) split and used with a little differetn strength at each side.

You could make a face that was young at the left and old at the right if you wanted (I did so, once. It was scary O.o - but sorta cool)

Thankyou Trekkie, I knew about splitting morphs but had never thought of splitting the character morphs, I'll be taking a razor to those morphs as soon as I get my machine back from it's long render. Only the imminent death of my credit card stopped me grabbing "The Geezer" form your site, perhaps next wages, before the kids eat it all!

Lisarichie, thanks for the tip on Xnormal, the d/l just failed for a third time, but will give it another go later

As to displacement maps here's an example of an animated one I did a couple of years ago

 Thanks Morkonan

I've just uploaded the animation I mentioned in an earlier post using Trekkie's morphs + & - at the start and end

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnT87UzDZwg

and, here's my first try with Trekkie's Geezer, I added  quick and dirty wrinkles by adding a leather bump texture to the displacement mat, it needs toning dowwn on the ears for a start, hid the neck seam with a borrowed scarf and dialled in some of D3's morphs. Was going for Methuselah but got more Davros LOL
