Interesting stuff here, which may help me with something I've been contemplating, creating the opposite effect, lank greasy hair.
I started by dulling the specular colour but was'nt  happy with that, Morkonan's point about highlights and shadows on the original texture leads me to think I will have to rework the textures and try again.
