It is possible to use a cube with the new water. You cant use the water editor but you can do anything the water editor does by using the function editor instead. In this quick test I did the following:
1. Made a terrain with a space for a lake.
2. Made a cube and positioned it where the lake is supposed to be.
3. Edited the cube's material and assigned the default water from the 'meta waters' section.
4. edited the 'foam' layer in the function editor. Clicked on the meta node and then modified the parameters controlling wave and coast foam. (well, I dont really have waves in this example)
5. To change the waves/agitation etc the 'default water' layer needs to be edited - I didnt do it for this image. I did try to set the displacement on but that crashed vue :(
Perhaps Infinite wont crash with the displacement on.
It does work as can be seen particularly from the coast foam. So - possible to use on a cube (or anything else for that matter).
I dont like the sharp edge between the water and the coast though...
