Perhaps attenuating the light intensity would do the trick - Edit the light, in the lighting tab chose 'custom'  and edit the filter to have less intensity at the source so it doesnt wash out the whole scene but enough to light the subject. Artur demonstrates  it very clearly in his tutorial in the link above. (and the rest of his points are interesting to watch too)
