Subject: Renaissance CG Movie style shaders

MarkHirst ( ) posted Thu, 23 April 2009 at 3:13 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 7:28 AM

I think the answer to my question is probably "you can only do this in Vue Infinite", but I'm hoping to create a material in Vue that will create the black and white, Frank Miller style shading that appeared in the film "Renaissance".

I have Vue 6 Pro Studio, and I've a sneaking suspicion that it will not let me create the material, but can use the material if created by Infinite. Anybody know if a material like this can be bought or downloaded?

I think you probably can, Pro Studio has pretty full access to function controls.
Have you looked at tutorials on Toon styling in general?

I think I remember something about not having access to certain nodes in the material editor in Pro Studio which preventing it from creating toon style shaders.

The Cel shading tutorial at Geekatplay will give you the answer on that

If it doesn't work then I'm sure you can get some made up without too much trouble. I have Complete and am intrigued now, so I may go ahead and play with it myself.

I think the 'Angle of Incidence' node is one of the missing nodes in Pro Studio. Certainly, there are buttons in the tutorial's editor window that I don't have.

Having said that, the cell shading bit adjusting the diffusion, ambience and contrast seems to work ok, although it's not the stark contrast I wanted.

You're right, Mark, V6 ProStudio doesn't have this node.

I have 7 Complete and when looking at the Geekatplay tutorial on cel shaders was able to do the whole thing. I still have my 6 Prostudio so tried to load the materials there and no luck, I also tried saving the functions and 6 Pro is unable to load those. If you ever move to 7 let me know, I have a zip file of a bunch of colors in narrow and wide outline forms. Sorry I wasn't able to share it with you now.

Thanks for having a go.

I was wondering if the freebie version might be able to create usable materials, but your experience suggests that there is already a version compatibility issue even on the paid for versions.

I'm a bit hesitant about upgrading, Vue's track record on stability being what it is.

I've posted what I've managed so far.
