THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: March/April Bryce Challenge Main Thread

airflamesred ( ) posted Fri, 24 April 2009 at 5:44 AM

Before I read this thread I had uploaded a second image. Am I to assume we are now restricted to one or have I missed pressing something?
Doesn't a second entry half your chances of winning?

We're still allowing multiple images. However that may change in the next challenge.

 Hey ThunderStone..
I'm sorry to see you've been vicitimzed by a debate about challenge rules..
these debates come about so often yet the outcome is always the same! not everyone agrees on what the rules should be.. many debates have past, no unanimous consensus has ever been reached.
Thats why each challenge gets its own rules assigned by the one throwing the challenge.. The rules said nothing about a limited number of entries, and as such, by the rules of this challenge, you did nothing wrong. Others have confirmed this as well.
As such I'd say its a shame to see your creative efforts withdrawn from the challenge and I'd personally think it would enrich the challenge if you put your entries back in?

I think it's a real shame... and no finger pointing here, but it's so easy to omit certain rules that may be different for each challenge.

I say that we should either have one set of rules period (this is obviously difficult since many people will not agree on one thing.

Or, the other way is to set precisly the challenge runners own rules so that there is no confusion.

Easy laid out rules the do's and don'ts so that everyone understands from the outset.

skiwillgee ( ) posted Fri, 24 April 2009 at 1:51 PM

Yes, what Dhama said.  If polling does not produce a clear majority consensus then it could possibly be a standing choice of the challenge author, same as imports, post work, etc... are presently specified.  The more concise the rules by the author the less problems foreseen.

I would only beg all who are interested in the forum challenge to refrain from too passionately disagreeing with what the future challenge winners present as the next challenge.  Simply work hard within the parameters stated and hopefully win the next challenge and set your own rules.

Well if there is no clear winner or in other words there's a tie, I think I'll give the deciding vote. Unless of course you want to argue the point?

Quest ( ) posted Fri, 24 April 2009 at 6:29 PM

Ok, question…on the challenge entry page right under the deadline cutoff date there is a link to “Entry Rules & Specifications”. Clicking on that link RodsArt specifies that the default size is 800 x 600 and if you read down further to “Entry Restrictions” says Jpg’s no larger than 800 x 600 and under 250kb. But on the entry page itself at the bottom under “Submit an Entry” just above the Browse window it says; “Image: (max 1024 x 1024). So which is it…800 x 600 or 1024 x 1024?

Quest ( ) posted Fri, 24 April 2009 at 6:36 PM

Forget it...I already see that some of the entries are 1024 x whatever.

dan whiteside ( ) posted Fri, 24 April 2009 at 7:21 PM

Well, my memory isn't too great (and I don't want to add any more problems in this thread) but I seem to recall Rod saying that the 1024x1024 on the entry form couldn't be changed and that the size limits for the challenge were 800x600.
I really don't mind the 1024 and it might be less confusing then having two apparently different rules.

Rayraz ( ) posted Fri, 24 April 2009 at 10:19 PM

considering its hard to find a new monitor thats goin on a lower resolution then 1024x768 its probably no problem if people post images of 1024px anyways :)

dhama ( ) posted Sat, 25 April 2009 at 2:09 AM

I entered an image larger than 800x600 once and I was told to re upload at the smaller size....

I guess something should be done to change that too. There are too many loopholes and contridictions in the challenge that need to be addressed.

orbital ( ) posted Sat, 25 April 2009 at 3:04 AM

It would be nice to change the size setting rules to a more up to date moniter resolution.

Rod said:
The default Image size is 800 x 600. Due to forum Layout size, these dimensions work well.
Anything larger expands beyond the borders. (and looks terrible)

Here he is only suggesting that 800x600 is the way to go.

If my waning memory serves me it was also a consideration to those who have dial-up.  Larger size meant longer load times.

I remember opening two windows and viewing one image while the other loaded before I got DSL.

Bryster, it may be another question for the poll; dial-up or broadband?

Willie: Good point!
Guys, does anyone still use dial-up?

dan whiteside ( ) posted Sun, 26 April 2009 at 12:35 PM

At home, yes, but I also have DSL at work so it works for me either way.
So my vote would go to 1024 since they do tend to show a lot more detail (IMO).
But if some feel they could no longer participate because of that, that could certainly change my mind.

skiwillgee ( ) posted Sun, 26 April 2009 at 2:05 PM

Chris, I suggest you make the dial-up, image size, multiple entry questions in a new thread

I am very depresed about a recent tragedy. Last week I had a hard drive go bad. Luckily..so I thought,, I backup my stuff on an external hard drive. Welp....All of my br6 files are corrupted. I cannot open ANY of them. This is after a full OS re-load, patches, etc. I have lost a lot. So, IF I submit anything for this challenge, I will have to work all night tonight and tomorrow to do it. I also have currupted models and 3dm files, so I dunno what I am going to do. It's horrible.

From now on, I am backing up to dvd and testing all backups before I go to sleep.

Also, on a different topic, IMO...we need to have challenges like this every month, rather than 2 months..I think it was too long to wait. heck not like I will have an entry now anyway! LOL crap...

...sad to hear about the drive meltdown, Was going to get an external for backups but I may rethink this decision and just deal with taking the extra time to burn more backup DVDs.

I have a question, when is the deadline for this contest? Also, I wonder if my picture would past muster for this type of contest. As it is hard to do work like Bonestell. He was in a league of his own. As far as my pictures are concern I may get about 20 comments on any given image I post but I see people that post space pictures here at Rederosity that get 3 times the response that I do. I do appreciate all the comment that I get as that means a lot to me but it does make me think if my stuff is just too boring. If the contest is still open this weekend I will try to come up with something if it is not too late.
Could someone let me know about the deadline for this contest.

Thanks,

David

PS: I have been away for a while so sorry for not posting anything lately.

Shoot, went to post my image - thought the deadline was 12 tonight!
I really need to pay more attention (or not wait till the last minute!).

DAM3D ( ) posted Thu, 30 April 2009 at 7:15 PM

That is kind of silly to make the deadline noon. hasn't it been midnight in the past?

A quick check of challenge archives shows deadlines have been all over the place; from 12pm, 12am, to 10pm.  Most were 10pm under Agent Smith's rule.  So bottom line is check the rules.
