Just tried it and it looks like the slider constraint is hosed.
If you set both y and z for limited movement, then bring both ends in tight to eliminate any movement on the y axis, you can set the z parameters (as long as you don't have to enter any negative numbers)
It won't work with both the x and y locked.

It's easier to use full constraints and lock everything but the z translation.
