My choice on whether to enter a contest tends to be on the subject. If it seems like fun and I had the time then I'd give it a go even without prize money.

I'd guess that the more cash on offer the more entries you would attract. Offer enough and you'd get the pros and semi-pros on board, if that is your intention but this may discourage beginners from taking part.
