The term really refers to two different activities. Some blogs (the big ones)
are effectively daily newspapers with a personal flavor, picking up on news
and events in the real world and adding comments. These big blogs often
have advertising on the sides, which makes money for the author.
The little ones are just a place to say whatever you want to say, or to show
your artistic output in an organized way, or to store your scientific findings
where other scientists can comment on them, etc, etc...
