In answer to your latest question, your rule is false.

First of all we are not gamma-correcting incoming colors - we're anti-gamma correcting them.

Second, it isn't a matter of where you're plugging them in. It's simply this: if you choose a color based on what you see on your screen (or paint them, or do anything involving getting visual feedback as you make color choices) then you are working with visuals in sRGB space. Before you work with these visuals arithmetically, you want them in linear color space.

It doesn't have anything whatsoever to do with where you're plugging these values in. It has to do with what is the true numerical value you are trying to work with.

What color (true linear color numerical value) do you think the blue background in the renderosity website is?
