Bump does not use colour information.
Neither does displacement.
Nor does the transparency channel use colour information.

Diffuse_Color does.
So does alternate_diffuse.

I know that if I plug a colourMap into a bump channel what is being used is not the colour information.

From what I'm reading now is that since I do use the colour information in specular and reflection and all those - anywhere, really, where I see colour in an existing shader, those colours will need to be anti-gammaed before processing.

It boils down to intent.
