Whether you come up with hyper-colours in the middle of your processing is immaterial, is what I understand from Bill's remarks. You probably will. There are methods to ensure that conservation of energy rules aren't transgressed that you can apply prior to gamma-correcting. Bill's already given us several.
These are fresh ideas to me (anything newer than 2 years is fresh!) - not something I work with every day or think about every day, and will take some time to assimilate. And even a bit longer to make these ideas into working principles. Hence, the failure to term things properly. I have it in my code, for crying out loud:
