Bryce has been the first step into 3D for many of us that now use more expensive apps alongside Bryce. I would reccomend it. The GUI is unique and normally people either love it or hate it. I was both; didn't really understand it at first, then put it aside for a few months. The second time I played around with I never stopped, still do to this day (that was like 11 years ago, lol)
I see it as a great way to get started in 3D, no matter where you end up going.
IMHO, the learning curve will sometimes be offset by the ease and speed you can just throw some abstract stuff together and render it out. There is something to be said about having some cool looking renders while leaning into the learning curve.
Bryce Version 5.5 is still free, btw;
