Is it distasteful? Only in the way Auschwitz itself is distasteful. As for creating a set, well, distastefulness would come in what use the artist made of the set, really. What kind of statement they were making. But I certainly think artists should be free to deal with the subject. I myself have pondered for a long time the making of an image of a lone concentration camp inhabitant. But my modeling skills aren't up to the challenge yet. I certainly would be very angry to have anyone try to tell me I shouldn't be allowed to create the art I wanted to create because the subject matter was distasteful. Some of the most powerful art in the world IS distasteful. As artists, we hold a mirror to the world and show it things it otherwise might not look at. And sometimes those things are distasteful. But art, by my definition, is that which elicits a reaction and thought in the viewer. Sometimes a kiss isn't enough. Somethimes you gotta slap em in the face.
