If you are planning on deleted version 2 in future anyway, then I would say go for it. All of my 3D content is on an external drive and I keep very little in the program's content folder other than scripts and plugins. You shouldn't have to re-install anything as long as you keep your content folder and its contents intact somewhere on your computer.
