kimarie: next time try to use a higher F number.. somewhere around F16, you'll get more definition in the blast and less blowout. And yeah.. looks like a dog.. even got a tail :)

Shooting fireworks is not easy. The sudden appearances make them hard to be shot. I shot them once on a distance with telelens and tripod, by watching where one came after another, directing my cam to that point and expose 10 seconds to 1 minute. When you're closer and you can see one starting to light some nice piece of firework you can do the same without telelens. Long exposure times have the advantage of beautiful trails, a short exposure time will just capture the one single moment. When it's windy there will be another effect because the trails tend to be blurred into the direction of the wind. Quite a different effect and as we say ihere in the Netherlands, change of food stimulates to eat!

cool article. thanks :-) If I decide to photogrpaph fireworks...I can use my tripod, and my cam has fireworks mode. I will have to experiment w/different setings, but will try to use a high f-stop.

TwoPynts ( ) posted Sat, 02 July 2005 at 6:11 PM

A fireworks mode? Get out, really?!? Actaully I think I've seen them before...what cam do you have?

coolj001 ( ) posted Sun, 03 July 2005 at 3:13 AM

I just had to double check to make sure I didn't make this up. lol. It is true. The cam is a Panasonic Lumix FZ20. It says it automatically adjusts the exposure or shutter speed for fireworks, and recommends pre-focusing and setting to manual focus and mounting on a tripod. It also has a party mode.

jcv2 ( ) posted Sun, 03 July 2005 at 6:56 AM

Sorry, Kort, didn't have time to read the articles but now I did. Very cool tips! Have fun tomorrow, Independence Day might become a stunner here on RR when the tips are applied well! :)

TwoPynts ( ) posted Sun, 03 July 2005 at 11:32 AM

All right...a camera that knows how to party Jeff! :) Thanks JC...I just hope it doesn't rain like it has been lately. :/

Well, if it rains try Switzerland at 8/1 or the Netherlands at 12/31 :) I hope it's gonna be good weather for you although winds might add some special effects (that might not be desired...).

Fantastic work, spectaculair fireworks in beautiful colors!

TwoPynts ( ) posted Thu, 02 July 2009 at 9:34 AM

I thought I'd bump this fireworks article out from the depths of the Forum. Cameras have gotten better and many have the Fireworks mode now, but the articles at the top are still worth reading. Have a fun and safe 4th of July fellow Americans and be sure to post your fireworks photos here, or link to your gallery if they really turn out good. :o)

Awesome fireworks pics everyone!-and happy upcoming 4th July to everyone in the US. :)

Here's a pic I took early this year at the Australia Day Fireworks-I chose this one because it shows the waviness caused by the strong wind that was blowing that night and I thought it looked pretty cool :D

Pippin_Mariane ( ) posted Sat, 04 July 2009 at 1:38 AM

Amazing that you all are able to capture the fireworks .. ^¿^

Here is my feeble attempt! I actually got much better shots of people shooting off their own fireworks before it got dark! Go figure! LOL :P

Nothing feeble about it...looks great! Sometimes a little light can add to the image so that things aren't just black sky and fireworks. I posted some more shots...as animations: http://market.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1911829 http://market.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1912353 http://market.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1913402
