I have been there, on a commemorative day-trip with a largely Jewish party flying to and from Luton (UK) airport via Krakow airport. (I am Gentile.) It was NOT A PLEASURE TRIP. The memory of old evil hung heavily about the place. No bird sang. I saw no birds except crows there. I was thankful to get out of the fenced camp area afterwards, and ditto at Birkenau (alias Auschwitz II). The name still makes many people shudder and brings up memories and should not be used casually in extended uses.

(OK, OK, it can't be helped when having to quote prewar literature which uses the name as another name for Oswiecim town which the camp was named after.)
