While searching the web, I came across the original creator's (Ken-Ichi Kutsugi) site. 

If you're interested check out his gallery especially the 2d section.

From what I can see the 2d stuff pre-dates the Terai Yuki we all love,but you can see how similar the characters looked in the end.
