I've always used the "click it off" button (or ALT+F4 when the button's off the screen), so I never knew about using ESC to close the render window. I did cause Vue to crash when I tried doing too much, too fast for it to keep up with me. It needs its bit of time to redraw the windows plus update the little preview, change views as needed, etc., and I wasn't granting it enough time. How long that is, of course, varies with the system. I was feeling like king of the world having gone from a 200 mhz Pentium to a 1.4 gig Athlon -- wheee! Speed Racer! But even so, Vue still needs its little bit of time to do all its tasks, even if that just means one more second. :)
