XP is always an option,  One thing you can do is use Vista to create a partion for XP and then have a duo boot laptop, (you HD is certainly large enough for it )  than simply test for yourself.

In the end,  you'll want to wait for Windows 7, because you'll be eligible for a FREE upgrade - that is, if it's a brand new laptop.,  :)
