If the linking were standard, they could use an overlay on the thumb or some other indicator. Since it is up to the uploader to create their link in the HTML... "Maybe if you hit details you will see this. If you just hit download you will not." Exactly, to have it otherwise would put both alternatives on too equal a footing. Either take the path to the ad or take a chance that there may be a site link on the details page - which will still have ads but they may be for the person who created the free item.
