When I was a history major in college, I took a class on the civil war, the most chilling thing was reading diaries of soldiers and letters from soldiers. I swear I had nightmares for months after that class. I simply don't understand how those soldiers stayed on and kept fighting, considering what they were experiencing. The reality, if you can believe it, was even worse than the worst of those photos.
