I suspect John Wind uses Truespace, and Compose was originally designed to allow body parts to be transferred easily between TS and Poser. I don't know enough about Truespace to say how many of Compose's features are due to the way TS works, and how many are handy things that just got added on. The link for Compose goes straight to the zip file: John's home page doesn't even mention it, as far as I can see! If you're reading this, John... The link I've attached is a tutorial for using Compose on the Mac, but because it's Java based it applies equally well to Windows. Just ignore the Mac specific bits.
