Subject: Daz Studio 3 Advanced--Give Me Your Reviews

I'm seriously considering Daz Studio Advanced, but am not sure I would use any of the advanced features other than the morph follower and figure mixer.  Is it a stable program; what do you feel are the main advantages of buying it as opposed to the free Daz Studio.

I'm tired of fighting with conforming clothes in Poser, Daz Studio seems to handle them better.

TZORG ( ) posted Wed, 30 September 2009 at 10:13 AM

I don't think the free version comes with UberEnvironment 2? Maybe I'm wrong. But if I'm right then you'd need to find another way to get AO and ILT if you only get basic

You can use the advanced features (except 64 bit) for 30 days IIRC.

Vestmann ( ) posted Wed, 30 September 2009 at 11:21 AM

Have you asked over at the Daz forum?  Seems obvious they would know more about the program.

is it just me or is it that just as one of the DS v Poser threads fade to the next page another one starts..
it's like going to a BMW dealership and asking if you should buy an Audi and if it's a better auto

just me.. Im not trying to start a flaming war..
im sure most people stop by and read those threads and nothing new is ever discussed
just my take on it

This is a DS basic vs DS advanced thread, not DS vs Poser thread. Thus the gtfo posts.

joking.

Personally I have more than enough trouble getting DS2 to do what I want without even thinking about DS3, I'm happy to stay with Poser even if that means I miss out on Daz content in the future when they go DS exclusive on everything.

this will quickly turn into a DS3 v poser thread real quick. when someone say 'why are you asking about DS3 in the Poser forum..this isn't the first time a thread started like this here and i am sure it wont be the last, then someone will start with the "why i hate enter appropriate app here" they start off innocent enough but there is a loooooooooong history of this since the beginning of Studio do a search of Daz v Poser and see how many threads you find, most if not all are posted in the Poser forum, why is this? you may ask the number one answer is..cause there isn't a lot of activity in the Daz forum on Rendo..
it's deja vu all over again
history repeating itself
however sometimes  i do get a laugh out of them

but today i just grow weary..

it was a late night..

i now retreat to the insanity of my mind.....

Hi as others suggest  go to the DAZ Forum here or over at the DAZ site for more informed answers.

Many poser user here dont have that  much REAL experience with DAZ studio .

I was one of those people who used both programs upt until D/S 2.0; then had so many problems that I got disgusted with D/S and didn't reinstall after my computer melt down.  I asked here because I thought many people do, in fact, switch off between both applications.
I do post at the Daz forums from time to time; I posted here because I thought I'd get a more unbiased opinion.  Over there it's Poser stinks; D/S is better at everything.  Perhaps I'm really affraid that they will revoke my Plantinum Club Membership if I say anything bad about Studio.

I really think that there is really no threat that Daz will stop creating Poser content; it's a lot of their market and after all the base D/S has always been free.  I think it far more likely that you will eventually have to choose to buy a Daz version or a Poser version of something as both programs evolve in different directions.

Am I the only one who hates the way these Generation 4 figures conforming clothes don't conform properly?  I liked it better when morphs were not controlled completely by magnets; there seemed to be few rigging problems.  I don't know, perhaps it's just me.

Yes M4 does have a scaling bug, but it does not have anything to do with Poser as you can see in these three videos from phantom3D

I've seen one user in the gallery here who got good GI renders with d|s 3.0 right away.
they sent me an e-mail saying it had just been updated, and IIRC the base version was free, but the pro version was $149.95 american, slightly more than the upgrade to poser 8.

R_Hatch ( ) posted Thu, 01 October 2009 at 1:09 AM

Economic issues aside, I really don't get the whole DAZ|Studio vs Poser mentality. I have both Poser 8 and DAZ|Studio 3 Advanced, and they each have their distinct advantages. I'm more comfortable with Poser 8's UI, so I use it the most, but the figure mixer in DAZ|Studio 3 Advanced is something I could now not imagine not having.

Sorry, that's BS. Yes there are a few ignorant people with that attitude over there, but no more than people with the opposite attitude over here. There a a lot of Poser users in the DAZ forums.

The scaling problem with clothing not fitting the scaled Freak properly in Poser has nothing to do with the figure itself. It's the way the scaling information is transfered from the figure to the clothing in the program. What part of that don't you understand? Smith Micro understands and acknowledges it,

Phantom3d wrote; Quote - "Now, the conforming clothing will not follow the scaling when you scale the figure in Poser. That is a issue in Poser that I wish they would fix.
Phantom3d understands and acknowledges it and so does most everyone that uses Poser and DAZ Studio.

I guess it's just too hard for some people to understand, or they simply don't want to understand.

Funny that sounds like you coldrake. watch the video to see what was actually the problem being discussed. phantom3D did not cover for Poser true, but there is indeed a scaling bug in M4

Tomsde, I have switched over to DS3Advance after having used Poser for nearly 9 years. I have all versions from P4 to PoserPro. So, I had some hard time at the start to get used to Studio's interface but I changed the interface to what I like, added those tools that I wanted to have visible all the time, selected the neat Carrara style and finally found my way around it.

Now I'm using the 64bit version since I have a 64OS and it works like a charm. Compared to PoserPro on my system Studio loads much faster - like 21...22....23 there it is while it's taking PoserPro from 21... 22 .... 34 to open. I found that figures like V4, M4 are loading much faster in Studio too. I was really surprised and thought it's maybe because Studio is 64bit but since I have the 32bit version installed too I tested loading times there and found it just as fast.

DS3Advance comes with a material room - very nifty but takes some time to get used too even if you are familiar with the Poser material room. It has UberEnvironment2 which is easy to use and to adjust.  I like the included UberSurface which is a new version of the the EliteHumanSkinShaders (which I prefer over the available skin shaders for Poser).

DS is very stable on my system, loads every Poser Pz3 I throw at it and behaves nicely as it should. Rendertimes depend on the lights you're using, not different from Poser here.

I find working with lights much easier as in Poser since in DS you can actually look through the light like through a camera and that enables you to adjust them easily.

Maybe I'm biased LOL but I can only recommend it and I have been told by friends that they've never thougth they'd ever see me doodling in Studio. Might say a lot about what I thought about Studio before.

I haven't used Poser since I have Studio and I do not see me going back.

That option has actually been available in Poser for a long time. It's called shadow cameras.

The 64bit version is what lures me most towards DS3.  How is plugin support for the 64bit version?  There is a lot of talk about third party plugins not being updated for the newest version.  From your description however some of the more important ones are included like Ubershade and Elite skin shader. How about the dynamic cloth module? Does it work for the 64bit version?

Puntomaus ( ) posted Thu, 01 October 2009 at 7:20 AM

I know about the Shadow Cameras but it's still a bit different. In Poser you need to render once before the Shadow Cams are available while in Studio I can look through the lights the moment I have created them.

Looks like the dynamic cloth module is for the 32bit version as well as LipSync since both is not in Studio 64 but Studio 32.

I have not bought additional plugins except the LightDomePro 2 and ahenvironment2 but I think the pwsurface has been updated. Not sure about other plugins.

I use ds 3 advanced and poser, did buy p8 but morph brush dont do what was expected from write up.
I use poser if not render to setup figures and scenes then load into ds3 as i still prefer after all those years, using poser setup body scenes as im still not used to ajusting body parts on ds.

I recently switched from DAZ 3A to Poser 8.  Shadow Cams actually are available prior to rendering.

LOL ... you're right. I opened PoserPro and checked it out for the first time. I never noticed that before.  I had followed a tut by bagginsbill long ago about the Poser Shadow Cams and there it was mentioned that you need to render once before the Shadow cams are available. It never occured to me to check if anything had changed in the following versions. You'll never stop learning :)

I started using Poser 5 and loved it, Figured out I needed IBL support and instead of upgrading to Poser 7 , I maxed out Daz 2.0...Now Im needing specular lights support and looking at either Daz 3A or Poser 8....I must say after playing with Daz 2 for a while I cant knock it , Daz 3A is solid but I see renders from firefly and they are better than 3delight (giving also that D/S is not fully functional with renderman yet). Im considering Poser 8  over DS3A for the next upgrade.

One thing I do like about DS is the plugins (im not sure if all are compatible with Poser 8) like
Mood Master DS Z-Depth FX Layers

Pw effect...etc.

Tomsde ( ) posted Thu, 01 October 2009 at 7:01 PM

I didn't mean to imply that people on the Daz forum were particularly hostile; I just know that I was flamed pretty severely when talking about Poser issues on the Daz forums in the past.

From what I'm reading I think that Daz Studio Advanced would be a boon to me.  Even though the scaling thing with the clothing is not a Poser "bug" , it is nice to conform clothing and have them fit without a lot of messing around with them.  I'd rather spend more time composing my scenes than tweaking clothing settings.  Plus the morph follower looks exceedingly helpful.

Shader node, though, arrrrgh make me dizzy.  ;)

No, they aren't, but you have alternatives like Advanced render settings by semidieu, VSS by Baginsbill and many more.

Actually it does, Girl 4 has scaling for her feet and hands and the same thing occurs if you use boots or gloves on her with scaling on. you will also find that the same issues occur with Apollo maximus and clothing for him when you use his age scaling options. the reason you don't hear about this problem for other gen 4 figures is that they don't use scaling in conjunction with their morphs like F4 does.
