I recently discovered a quick and dirty way of doing a split tone in photoshop.
Basically get your monochrome photo up, bring up level layer, then play around with the black and white points of the colours (as opposed to the complete RGB sliders) - drop down box at the top of the levels window - and you can get split tones / tints. Havent stopped to think how it affects the pic quality but it seemed to work ok for a 5 second play around.
