Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
There are two runtimes, one is located in the X86 Program files and the other is located in Public>Public Documents>Poser 8 Contents. Install your V and M 4s there ( That is the one that has all your loaded runtime files and the one you should use), the other one (X86) under Smithmicro has what is needed for the program to function-don't use that one, leave it as is. Jan
Hmm need more info from you. Do you have a Poser directory in your Public area ( I do and it was created by Poser's .exe application file automatically--I found it when I wanted to load a texture file in the Material's room and went to the X86 area and nothing showed up, I found all the files in the Public area after going crazy for about 1/2 hour trying to find the stuff).
Next question, is your Mike 4 and .zip file. If so you should be able to create a new file and extract to it, then look in the run time that is created a see where everything goes, then copy the contents of each folder to the same folder in the Public Poser area. Jan
Have you set Winzip to run with Administrator settings? you'll find nothing will unzip properly or in some cases at all if you don't.
ps you can get round the installing of Daz stuff directly into the Poser runtime by adding a text file called Poser.exe into whichever folder you want to install to. Daz need to update their installers to take into account Poser8 not needing to have everything in it's main runtime.

Let me ask you this, are you saying in Vista, you get 2 runtime setups, one that is created by Poser 8 and the one in the program files? I wonder how this will work in Windows 7? I know that when we tested Vista, all seemed to work fine with Poser 7 and Poser 8, I never heard of doing it this way? Also, some programs we installed directly to the c drive and not into Program files, due to the UAC, also again, everything seem to work actually better with direct install to c drive.
Will be getting Win 7 in a few days and am wondering how alike it is to Vista?
Hi Sam, yep that is what happened when I installed Poser 8, The Poser Content file was created in Public area and the other file was established in the X86 Program area by the .exe file. SmithMicro had a reason for doing that and eveything works just fine. Now like Lucifer stated M4 execute file may be looking for Poser 7, 6, or 5 folder. It sure doesn't hurt to make a Poser.exe file in the Public Document area and see if M4 finds it. Jan
I tried the suggestion of putting the Mike 4 into a seperate folder labeled poser.exe, and that didn't work. I plan to contact DAZ today and get some help from them about the installation of Mike 4 and others. So far all of the other things have been working since I was told how to do it through the forum here.

Just select "DAZ Studio" as the install type and you'll avoid the unwanted checking.
If you insist on using one of the Poser install types, you'll need to create an empty file called Poser.exe in the folder which contains the Runtime you want to install to.
Whichever method you use, you'll get the same files.

Can you please post your answer here from Daz? I have Vista too and i'm having a horrible time with access/restriction problems - and transferring/installing files stored on my external drive - its a royal pain in the arse - i'm so not used to vista and its driving me crazy. Please keep us posted on what you find out, and thank u for posting these questions/answers - as its really helping me too (and i'm sure others)

No no NO! Not in a folder titled 'Poser.exe'. That won't work!
Find the runtime folder where you want the content to be installed. That must be inside another folder - for the sake of argument we'll say it's called XYZ. Make a new text document and name it 'Poser.exe' and put it in the 'XYZ' folder. If it ends up with the .txt extension, take that off. The text file must be named 'Poser.exe.' This fools the DAZ installer into thinking that this is the folder it needs. So, to recap: inside your 'XYZ' folder should be a runtime folder and a file called 'Poser.exe'.

Just install Poser in a NON DEFAULT location and Bob's your uncle. Installing anything in Vista under Program Files is asking for problems. Install Poser to C:3D... or whatever drive you have available (substitute the 3D for anything you'd like of course)
Also consider disabling UAC - it's more bother than help IMO.

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.
I use the free TUGzip utility to unpak (or pack) files. It is here www.tugzip.com/index.php .
Just click the download button on the left of the description.
As to install-
I used the defaults that the installers provide for both DAZ and Smith Micro. The runtime for content is located in C:userspublicpublic documentsPoser 8 Content for poser 8.
There is an option in the poser installer to place the runtime in C:usersdocuments.
(You might want to do this if there are multiple users for your system and you want to restrict access to the content for some reason.)
The path for DAZ Studio3A is C:usersdocumentsDAZ 3DStudio 3. The runtime is
in the content folder under studio 3.
For DAZ content the installer may have an option for DAZ 3D or poser, but in any case allow you to chose an install folder (brouse). You want to chose the folder above the runtime where you want the content. i,e "content" for DAZ Studio, or "Poser 8 Content" for poser.
Both programs now can map multiple "runtimes", so you can actually put content anywhere you like. The procedure to locate the content is different for each program. In poser, use the content room and select the "add Library" button. A brouse window will open, and you navigate to the runtime you want to add, highlight the folder. Click ok and yoiu should be good to go.
Most poser content is supplied as a *.zip or *.rar file. Here is where TUGZip is nice. TUGZip integrates with windows explorer! So, just click on the zip file, and the content will appear in the right explorer pane. Just highlite the "runtime", then at the top of the exporer window click "edit" and select "copy to folder" from the drop down. A brouse window will open, navigate to were you want content ("content" for DAZ Studio, or Poser 8 Content" for poser , highlight the folder and click the "copy" button. You will get some prompts about meriging the folders, and usually this is what you want (click yes or yes to all). Sometimes you will get messages about duplicate files (skip, repace or keep both) -it seems everyone includes a "readme" rather than product_name_readme-. You will have to decide how you want to handle this (keep both, then later rename the duplicate(s)).
Note, there is also some content folders under C:Program FilesDAZ 3DDAZStudio3 and
C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser 8. These are for "static" resources and plugins.
I Hope this helps

I bought a new computer yesterday, and it has Windows Vista as the operating system. I also bought Poser 8 yesterday and downloaded it and then installed it.
The problem I having with everything is that I know that I have installed Vicki 4, Mike 4, and other things from DAZ, but am not getting them to show up in the library. I also am unable to unzip any of the files of the poser stuff that is on my external hard drive due to an access restriction problem.
Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong, and how to fix the problems I am having?
I am supposed to get a free update to Windows 7 when it is released on Thursday, and hopefully that will help.
I bought Winzip 14 today for unzipping, but it isn't allowing me to unzip my stuff.
