I use the free TUGzip utility to unpak (or pack) files. It is here www.tugzip.com/index.php .
Just click the download button on the left of the description.
As to install-
I used the defaults that the installers provide for both DAZ and Smith Micro. The runtime for content is located in C:userspublicpublic documentsPoser 8 Content for poser 8.
There is an option in the poser installer to place the runtime in C:users
(You might want to do this if there are multiple users for your system and you want to restrict access to the content for some reason.)
The path for DAZ Studio3A is C:users
in the content folder under studio 3.
For DAZ content the installer may have an option for DAZ 3D or poser, but in any case allow you to chose an install folder (brouse). You want to chose the folder above the runtime where you want the content. i,e "content" for DAZ Studio, or "Poser 8 Content" for poser.
Both programs now can map multiple "runtimes", so you can actually put content anywhere you like. The procedure to locate the content is different for each program. In poser, use the content room and select the "add Library" button. A brouse window will open, and you navigate to the runtime you want to add, highlight the folder. Click ok and yoiu should be good to go.
Most poser content is supplied as a *.zip or *.rar file. Here is where TUGZip is nice. TUGZip integrates with windows explorer! So, just click on the zip file, and the content will appear in the right explorer pane. Just highlite the "runtime", then at the top of the exporer window click "edit" and select "copy to folder" from the drop down. A brouse window will open, navigate to were you want content ("content" for DAZ Studio, or Poser 8 Content" for poser , highlight the folder and click the "copy" button. You will get some prompts about meriging the folders, and usually this is what you want (click yes or yes to all). Sometimes you will get messages about duplicate files (skip, repace or keep both) -it seems everyone includes a "readme" rather than product_name_readme-. You will have to decide how you want to handle this (keep both, then later rename the duplicate(s)).
Note, there is also some content folders under C:Program FilesDAZ 3DDAZStudio3 and
C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser 8. These are for "static" resources and plugins.
I Hope this helps
